Andisheh cultural center to review “Tótem”
TEHRAN- “Tótem”, a 2023 movie directed by Mexican film director and screenwriter Lila Avilés, will go on screen at the Andisheh Cultural Center in Tehran on Monday.
A review session will be held with the presence of the film critics Mehdi Soltani and Mohsen Soleimani Fakher after the screening.
“Tótem” centers around seven-year-old Sol, who spends a significant day at her grandfather's house, where her aunts Nuri and Alejandra are organizing a birthday party for her father, Tonatiuh. This celebration, marked as potentially his last, doubles as a bittersweet farewell. As evening falls, Sol experiences an unsettling shift in her surroundings, leading her to confront the reality of letting go and the complexities of life and loss.
The film premiered at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival, competing for the esteemed Golden Bear. A co-production among Mexico, Denmark, and France, “Tótem” garnered widespread critical acclaim, ultimately recognized as one of the top five international films of 2023 by the National Board of Review. It was also chosen as Mexico's entry for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards, making it to the shortlist of 15 finalists.
“Tótem” has received a remarkable approval rating of 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting the positive reception from audiences and critics alike. The consensus lauds it as a "heartfelt film" that navigates complex themes with grace, asserting it as a significant victory for Avilés.
Critics have praised “Tótem” for its vibrant portrayal of family dynamics. The film has also garnered numerous accolades, including the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the Berlin International Film Festival. Other achievements include wins for Best Picture and Best Cinematography at the Lima Film Festival.
Born in 1982 in Mexico City, Avilés is a prominent Mexican film director, screenwriter, actress, and producer. She debuted in feature films with “The Chambermaid” in 2018, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film garnered critical acclaim, winning the Ariel Award for Best Debut Work and earning a nomination for Best Director. It was also Mexico's entry for Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards.
